Mauer's first large house in Beaumont was built in this south-side neighborhood for Caroline Gilbert, an artist and the daughter of a Beaumont entrepreneur, and her husband, M. L. Hinchee, a lumber dealer and musician. It is a picturesque version of Colonial Revival with a sandstone gallery and a green tile roof. The house is set in a luxuriant garden rimmed with sandstone fence piers and thickly canopied by live oak, magnolia, and palm trees. The house was rehabilitated in 1978 by Beaumont architect Bryan L. Hendrix as his home and studio.
