Many Newporters now refer to this building as “De la Salle,” after the boys' preparatory school that occupied it in the middle years of the last century, but it was built as a private residence. The rough stone walls trimmed with darker stone details complement the medieval forms of steep pitched roofs, corner turret, and the two flamboyantly shaped, Jacobean-inspired gables that cap the entry and the south side of the structure. Dudley Newton experimented with a similar ensemble of forms on a smaller project, his 1870s design for the outbuildings at Belair (see
NE53
), but they seem more comfortably employed here on these three-story facades.
