This utilitarian brick printing plant with the Ballinger company's signature saw-toothed skylights is where J. Horace McFarland's famous seed catalogs were printed. The building has recently been adapted to housing. Its owner, the redoubtable McFarland, provided the vision that transformed his native city with such public health initiatives as the water filtration plant, and civic amenities including Riverfront Park and Wildwood Lake. McFarland cofounded the American Civic Association and was a proponent of the “Harrisburg Plan,” which spread the City Beautiful movement to midsized cities across the nation before the Great Depression. He also was a proponent of the National Park Service, worked with John Muir to preserve Niagara Falls and Yosemite Park, and was an early advocate of city planning and zoning to prevent sprawl.
