In 1901, Virgil Watkins began publishing the Taylorsville Signal, which continued until 1966. In 1903, he moved his general store and newspaper offices into this small wooden structure with drop siding and a pedimented front parapet. Relocated slightly south in 1973, it is now the Watkins Museum (open by appointment). It contains its original store shelving, counters, and display cases, a vintage printing press, and a potbellied stove. Across Eureka Street to the west at number 201 stands the pristinely rehabilitated, wooden, deeply bracketed Gulf and Ship Island/Illinois Central depot (after 1900).
