As the architect of the courthouse, Joseph Schwartz of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, presented the county and town with a well-informed exercise in Beaux-Arts Classicism. The rectangular block is broken into on all four sides by porches with Doric columns, while the four corners of the building are defined by wide, solid-appearing pilasters. The limestone surface is treated with horizontal rustication on the ground-floor level; the surfaces above are smooth, with appropriate ornamentation. The entrance, which projects from the main block, is surmounted by a fierce seated lion.
