Approaching Hanapepe from the east, travelers drive down Hanapepe Road, and as they come around the bend at the bottom of the hill, the town opens before them. Dominating the immediate foreground on the left, the two-story Serikawa building provides an impressive introduction to the town, with its cantilevered lanai extending over the side walk for the seventy-foot length of the building. Capped by a hipped gable roof, the single-wall structure's asymmetrical fenestration is, in part, the result of remodelings to the first-floor commercial space. The original owner, Koichi Serikawa, operated a general store, restaurant, and hotel in this structure. The former hotel's second-floor guest rooms are now accessed from the rear, but still retain their doorways leading to the lanai.
