La Morada de Garcia

This stuccoed adobe hall, a gathering place for members of the Penitente sect, has been reinforced with a concrete apron and buttresses. The gable roof is sheathed in metal, with adobe gable ends. The L configuration shelters a statue of Jesus dragging a cross. The Penitentes, an all-male sect once outlawed by the Catholic Church for their practice of extreme penance with self-flagellation and even crucifixions, have in recent years been accepted as a social, political, and spiritual fraternity. This reconciliation, aimed at encouraging men to participate in church activities, is demonstrated by this morada's location next to Sacred Heart Church.
