A suitable successor to the picturesque earlier wooden industrial buildings on the waterfront, this new salmon hatchery is a clean, modern metal building. The hatchery incubates 162 million salmon eggs per year. Most of the salmon are released in other streams for eventual harvest by commercial and sport fishermen; the rest of the four species of salmon return to the hatchery to be used for brood stock. The hatchery includes a large visitor center with a window for viewing underwater.
